To add a little more to the conversation, I brought a couple of books to recommend that I forgot to mention during the interview. A classic I read years ago and still quote often is Stephen Coveys 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I regularly recall and mention the habit #2 Begin With The End In Mind and #7 Sharpen The Saw, and I am routinely trying to live in what the book refers to as Quadrant #2. Another more recent book is Simon Sinek’s Start With Why, a great book that applies to so much of life. From my Master’s program Robert Thomas’ book Crucibles of Leadership. It points out that leaders go through some kind of crucible that challenges their leadership or challenges their core beliefs and navigating through the crucible is part of what makes the leader who they are. Another study in moderately sized companies confirmed that leaders mentioned a leadership failure as the one thing that taught them more about leadership than any leadership book or class or program.
